Top 10 Affordable Fashion Style Updates

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

yt-heather-color-250x275Hey Yummies!

Lately you’ve been asking me, “How can I update my wardrobe without spending a ton of money?”

My approach to fashion is to take the latest trends and mix a little bit new with a little of what you’ve already got. The result can be a sophisticated-meets-funky-relaxed vibe — and a whole lotta fun!

Here are my Top 10 Affordable Fashion Style Updates!

1. Dress like a lady!
Fun ladylike suiting adds a bit of lux to your look.

  • Try the 40’s inspired suit: belted jackets with peplums and shoulder pads over slim pencil skirts with platform pumps or booties
  • Choose a darling ruffled blouse that will take you all the way through the season and even on to spring
  • Wonderful wool, wool-blend and tweed pencil skirts are all the rage in this season — timeless classics worth snatching up
  • The Yummie Tummie Briefie gives you an hour-glass shape, to show off these ladylike styles!

2. High platform heels, boots and booties
If you buy one thing this fall, choose shoes.

  • The stylish will be waltzing around in towering heels or booties, or the not-to-be-missed items this season, the over-the-knee or biker boot.
  • OTK boots will work with a bevy of looks from super short mini-dresses and last year’s tunics to the slimmest of jeans or cuffed shorts and patterned tights
  • If your prefer a shorter boot, try a motorcycle style with loads of buckles
  • Designer styles are delicious but work a number on your wallet — take a trek to stores like Aldo or Steve Madden and save enough to stock up on other fall tidbits too!

3. The Secret Chic of Fur Vests
Show your wild side!

  • You can make a fur vest work with just about everything – jeans, dresses, even jumpsuits. The secret?  Accent the waist, and get the right length.
  • The perfect fur vest is either a bolero style or belted, which allows you to show off your figure and avoid looking like a walking fur ball.
  • A faux fur vest – or even a jacket! — just reeks of retro chic
  • Stop in to your local vintage shop and snag a real one… it’s a good way to support local business while simultaneously recycling!
  • Layer over a long sleeved Yummie Tummie Body T for a casually luxurious look!

4. Strong Shoulder Boyfriend Blazer
Simply a great, flattering, versatile, go-to piece for the season.

  • Wear your new boyfriend blazer with weighty boots and a chunky chain necklace over a girly top and skirt or dress
  • Black leggings in leather, lycra, shiny, matte, even velvet for holiday fun, are great paired with a slinky and long boyfriend — but watch the length if you’re under 5’4”, too long will make your legs appear short!
  • Throw over your favorite Yummie Tummie Tank and a tissue soft cotton t-shirt, ruffled blouse and pencil pants, or a high-waisted skirt or cuffed shorts and tights.
  • You cannot go wrong with this look even with basic old blue jeans!

5. Patterned Tights
A flirty way to dress up an otherwise sedate outfit!

  • Black patterned tights are the hot ticket, and pair best with above the knee skirts, dresses or shorts, especially if you are vertically challenged
  • Stick with black on black to lengthen the leg, and add little black booties or shoeties with at least a three-inch heel for a long and lean look
  • If you are blessed with height you can definitely rock the flat boot or shoe, but skip the colored or metallic shoes to avoid looking like you just stepped out of an 80’s revival band
  • Remember the best rule: One pattern per outfit is enough — play it safe with solid color frocks!

6. The Statement Necklace
One of these sparklers in a can’t-miss-it size is all you need.

  • Chunky stone and beaded necklaces look great with almost everything from pencil skirts to fitted dresses and even boyfriend jeans.
  • Not into necklaces? A chunky embellished cuff will also add a little flare to any outfit
  • I love the pieces by Chanel and YSL this season but check out trendy spots for the best bargains that won’t break the bank!

7. It’s in the “It Bag”!
Carry something big or small — or sometimes both!

  • Ladylike satchels and clutches are grabbing attention away from slouchy hobos
  • The timeless Chanel with gold chain is so right now
  • With the hectic lives we lead, we need to have everything with us at all times, so I still say the bigger the bag, the better!
  • Best of both worlds? Grab a big bag and throw your structured purse inside for a quick night out switch!

8. Wrap it up!
Effortlessly classy wrap coats carve your waist and look sexy.

  • Invest in this look and you’ll wear it to death over last year’s clothes and jeans
  • Go for a classic camel or bright red one as a counterpoint to a basically black wardrobe
  • Stick with light-weight wools and knits to avoid a bulky bathrobe look

9. Really Ready for Red
Choose the right shade for you: crimson, ruby, scarlet or rose!

  • Red is really hot in dresses, coats and suits
  • An eye-catching extra long wool scarf provides that shot of trendy color with anything
  • On a budget? Red lipstick is an inexpensive way to change your look in an instant!

10. Dabble in Daring – but Subtle – Makeup Trends
A little makeup switcheroo will make any outfit look fresh and updated!

  • When rocking those ruby red lips, go soft elsewhere
  • Slicked back hair — whether a tight pony or a messy bun — always look super chic
  • A little polish change can do wonders — try a deep gray like YSL’s, or a jade shade like the one used backstage at Chanel’s runway shows

Remember, just because someone says a look is hot, that doesn’t mean it’s right for you. I always encourage people to be brave and branch out. The best way to find a new look is to experiment.

But never buy something in doubt — go home and think it out!  If it’s right, you won’t be able to stop thinking about it. And those are the purchases you enjoy for the longest, season after season!

Stay Yummie!

Spring and Summer 2010 Photo Shoot - Behind the Scenes Sneak Peak!

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

It’s so exciting to see a collection come together each season. Starting with Heather’s inspiration, moving through refining the designs, patterns and production, and then into the final stages when we photograph the new pieces and get ready to preview it with the fashion editors.

Last week we did the Spring and Summer 2010 line photo shoot. As you’ll see, the latest designs continue the evolution of Yummie Tummie’s “show it off!” approach, with styles like the new “Undercover” Tank — it’s your favorite tank covered in cotton and concealing the shapewear panel!

While we can’t show you the whole collection (yet — it’s all available in January), here are a few glimpses from behind the scenes. Enjoy!

Style Q & A with Heather - Universally Wearable, Grown Up Layers, and Exploring New Styles!

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

strappybycupsize21I’ve told you before how much I love to answer your style questions, and invited you to send them in. The response was terrific and today I am posting the first three winners, all of whom will receive the Yummie Tummie in their style solution!

First we have a question from Christy, a stay at home mom of twins:

Hi Heather,

If I were to buy one Yummie Tummie that is the most universal and wearable in any situation, which style, what length and color, would you recommend? I am a stay at home mom that would like one that would save my life on a daily basis, whether home with the kids or out to lunch with a friend.

I am long in the torso and live in more fitted cotton shirts and low rise pants. I am fighting the muffin top after having my twins several years back. I still want to feel good in my clothes but as a family on a single income, I need to be practical.

Thank you very much!
Christy

Hi Christy,

Yummie Tummie Classic Tank

Thanks for your question! The answer for you is the Original Yummie Tummie Tank, in long length. You can try any color you think would work best in your wardrobe - I find you can’t go wrong with either white, black  or nude as staple basics.

The straps cover a contemporary bra and look great with sheer tops, under cardigans, jackets or on their own. The long length can be worn tucked in, or over any of your lowrise jeans to save you from that dreaded muffin top.

Keep fighting the good fight against muffin top!

Our second question comes from Sandra, a 30-something mom:

Hi, Heather.

I purchased my first Yummie Tummie just last week.  What is the best way to layer a Yummie Tummie with another tank without looking like my teenage daughter?

Your New Yummie Tummie Lover,
Sandra, a Mom in her 30’s

The New Strappy by Cup Size

The New Strappy by Cup Size

Hi Sandra,

I’m glad to say there are many “grown-up” ways to wear a layered look. The key is choosing the right sophisticated colors to differentiate yourself from teenagers, and putting them together with what you pair your layering tanks with. Stay away from destructed denim and cut off shorts. Dinner denim (dark rinse) or a pair of wide leg bottoms are a perfectly sophisticated match.

Muted colors like nudes and pale pinks work well together, and are flattering on everyone. Try the Strappy — or the new Strappy by Cup size if you like a little more support in the bust — in ivory, pale pink or nude shades.

Think classic, and steer around super-trendy or harsh colors and patterns. Remember, first you want people to notice how good you look, then what you’re wearing!

Our third question comes from Debbie, who’s hoping to find a new look.

Hi Heather,

My question is about the Yummie Tummie Boyfriend. What would look better with this type of tank, a blouse over top or layered with another tank? I wear a lot of blouses but want to try a different look and I am not sure how to pair this tank.

Thank you,
Debbie

Hi Debbie,

Good news - you can do both! Your Yummie Tummie Boyfriend will look stylish layered under other tanks, or under blouses, cardigans, or jackets. This versatile style can be dressed up or down.

Because the straps are wide enough to cover any bra strap, you will look pulled together with a basic tank with jeans or crisp white shorts. You can wear the same tank peeking out of a blouse with a pantsuit,  as a layering essential  and loads of confidence!

It’s fantastic that you’re trying new looks. It’s important to give yourself permission to experiment, just remember to follow your instincts. If you have a feeling that something is too casual for the office, then it probably is.

Thanks again to everyone who sent in questions. I’ll keep answering one each month, so please keep asking! Click here to submit your questions through the Contact Us form, or share them with everyone below in the comments.

Stay Yummie!

Hot Weather Style Rules

The Boyfriend Tank in juicy raspberry!

Raspberry Boyfriend Tank!

Hot weather is here, with weekends filled up with cookouts, softball games and beach parties. It’s also when I start reminding the ladies in my life about a big rule of style: “casual” doesn’t mean you can toss all fashion sensibility into the garbage!

It’s easy to be comfortable and have great style. Just follow these Casual Party Dos and Don’ts!

Do:

  • Embrace color – try out a bold orange hair accessory, or a flirty raspberry pink Yummie Tummie Boyfriend Tank to show off sexy shoulders.
  • Go for a comfortable shoe – have fun with a flat, metallic sandal, or try the Fit Flop which were featured on Oprah’s favorite things with Yummie Tummie
  • Choose simple jewelry, like a charm – I love Good Charma! — on a leather cord or silver chain
  • Keep your makeup light – use SPF, tinted moisturizer, not heavy foundation, swipe on some waterproof mascara, and a pretty, sheer lip gloss. You’ll be done, but not too done. (more…)

When Should You Go Long?

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

After my last newsletter about choosing the right size Yummie Tummie, so many of you wrote in to ask “Should I get the regular or long length?”

My fast and easy answer is: “Get both!”

Here’s why: the two lengths do different jobs. Most of us have a convertible bra to wear with halters or strapless looks, and another one that is perfect under t-shirts. It’s the same with Yummie Tummie — you pick the one that works with the outfit!

For example, with a casual look like low-rise jeans and a hoodie, I wear a Yummie Tummie long boyfriend tank. The extra length lets me be confident that everything will stay covered, even when I’m chasing my kids up, over and around the jungle gym!

When I wear something dressier, like a sheer top with light-weight trousers, I pick one of the Yummie Tummie basics, like a strappy tank in the regular length. I can even tuck it in for a more formal look, without a lot of extra fabric bunching up.

I hope this helps you to find the right Yummie Tummie. I love answering your questions, so please keep sending them in!

Stay yummie!
Heather

California Dreaming

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

I just got home from an amazing trip to California, which you’ve been reading about if you follow me on Twitter or you’re a Yummie Tummie Facebook fan.

It was fantastic to meet so many of you in person. I love that women always pull up their shirts when they meet me - gotta show off your Yummie Tummie!

Everyone was wild about the spring collection, especially the sexy new Bareback in raspberry. It’s my favorite right now, too!

In San Francisco, I had a great conversation - Hi Michelle! - about figuring out which size Yummie Tummie to get. Since this is a question I hear all the time, I thought it would be good to tell everyone the big style secret: be comfortable!

Seriously, wear the size that fits and feels good on you! Start with your usual size. If you want a little more support and shaping, try on a size smaller. If it’s too tight, go a size up.

It’s that easy. The trick to looking yummie is feeling good. Your shapewear should make you happy. Try a Yummie Tummie and you’ll be wearing it with a big smile, I promise!
