Yummie Tummie is turning 4! To celebrate, we sat down to chat with founder Heather Thomson about work, family, fashion, and the future.
Did you make any New Year resolutions?
I’m so grateful for what I have, but there’s always room for improving. I’d like to continue to help women look and feel their best, and work on being the best mom and me that I can be.
How do you balance work and home?
It’s not easy, but I try to focus on the task at hand. If I’m with my kids, it’s all about them. If I’m at work, that’s where my attention is.
Who’s your favorite designer?
Lately, I’ve really been into Helmut Lang and his chic, sleek, and minimalistic point-of-view. I’ve been mixing some of his pieces into my current styles and just loving the way it looks.
What was it like working for celebrities?
It was some of the best and worst days of my life. It was exciting and inspiring, but hard work too. They all taught me something about myself.
What did they teach you?
P-Diddy Combs helped me push past my limits. Jennifer Lopez taught me about focus. Beyoncé taught me humility. She’s such a big star, but so gracious and respectful.
What inspires your designs?
I’m inspired by my evolving needs as a woman. Yummie Tummie started with my desire to shape my post-baby body. Turning 40 has given me a fresh perspective and inspiration for some exciting designs coming soon.
Why did you create a denim line?
There was a hole in the marketplace. Women want function and fashion, and now they can have it. Yummie Jeans don’t sag, bag, pinch, or work against you. They’re made to fit and flatter every body.
What are your must-have pieces?
I couldn’t live without the Milan Legging – so easy to pull on and run out the door looking fabulous. The Chris Slip and Roma Tank are my other go-to’s for a slim and sexy foundation.
What’s your advice for looking fabulous?
Embrace your features and your flaws. Nothing is sexier than confidence. That’s what Yummie Tummie is all about – loving what you see in the mirror every day.
What’s new for spring?
I can’t wait to launch our next innovation – the unbelievable Paperdolls collection. It slims and shapes with luxurious paper-thin fabric that feels like you’re wearing next to nothing. You’ve never seen shapewear so light and comfortable. It’s going to hit next week, so stay tuned!
Do you have a question for Heather? Post a comment here or check out our page on Facebook. She’d love to hear from you!
Heather realised that shapewear was in need of a revolution after having her children. After wearing a string of uncomfortable and unsexy undergarments, she decided to act. Taking to her sewing machine she created Yummie by Heather Thomson, the world’s first patented shapewear that slims and shapes whilst promising ‘wow not ow’. Made with a patent-pending dual fabric technology, Yummie by Heather Thomson has a midsection panel which smoothes and shapes, whilst camouflaging any lumps and bumps. The microfibre fabric always feels cool and comfortable and Yummie shapewear never, ever rolls, rides up or feels clingy.
Yummie by Heather Thomson is designed to be seen and the combination of the brand’s good looks and functionality has led to world-wide popularity. Heather’s attitude to underwear is winning her many A-list admirers; Michelle Obama, Blake Lively and Eva Longoria are amongst those who have publicly praised Yummie by Heather Thomson. In the UK, Yummie by Heather Thomson is sold at stores such as Harrod’s and Harvey Nichols and online at Net-a-Porter.
As a designer, Heather also helped celebrities such as P-Diddy Combs, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez, to create their own fashion brands. In fact, the launch of Sean Jean was so successful that it received three nominations for awards from the Council of Fashion Designers America.
Heather is also an inspirational philanthropist in her home country supporting her charity, The Kellner Pediatric Liver Foundation, founded by her friends Samantha and Andrew Kellner. The foundation drives awareness about organ donation and helps disadvantaged families to receive medical care.
What advice would you give to mums who are thinking about setting up their own business?
Starting your own business is very much like having a baby; your business by default becomes your other baby. You feel the excitement and joy, but much like pregnancy it’s a lot of hard work and sacrifice. So we as mothers are already ahead of the curve. So if you truly want it and you think you can see it, it can be yours… but nothing comes easy. Be prepared for the hard work, but don’t let the naysayers stop you from believing in yourself and your ideas.
What’s your top style tip for new mums?
I always say confidence is sexy – there is no need to be ashamed or embarrassed about your “new” body post-baby. Embrace your new curves. Don’t try to hide them, flaunt it… and really that’s where my Yummie Tummie 3-section tank was born out of. I wanted to accentuate my new yummie curves, not feel squeezed and pinched and smothered in ugly, uncomfortable “traditional shapewear.” I truly feel you cannot be sexy if you don’t feel comfortable in your own self, and really that’s the mission of my shapewear– to help women find the confidence they already have within no matter their shape or size!
Have you got a favourite designer or brand?
I love fashion and the history of clothing, of course I have my favourites – what woman doesn’t?! I honestly admire the female designers who’ve embraced women for all they are and all they are worth. Coco Chanel was a true pioneer and innovator who wanted women to embrace their bodies and be free. I’ve long admired Chanel for her early innovative use of jersey fabrics back when no other designer was using those fabrics in women’s wear. I see parallels in my work with hers as we both rejected the idea of constricting women’s bodies into one ideal form. Femininity is all about the various curves and shapes. I feel the same about Diane Von Furstenberg – her wrap dress was a game changer who let women be sexy, comfortable and stylish. And what woman doesn’t slip into that signature dress and feel like she can take on the world? I know I feel empowered every time I put on my favorite DVF (with a yummie tummie slip of mine underneath, of course).
Any recommendations on where to take the family in New York?
New York is a lot cleaner these days and I love that my children are able to experience this new found beauty that is resurging in NYC. I love the improvements to our existing parks and all the new parks popping up along our city’s waterfronts. If you want a fun, exciting day with the family in NYC void of the traditional visits to the museums, Statue of Liberty and iconic shops I’d suggest a lovely stroll at the recently revamped Highline. The gorgeous greenery mixed with the scenic views of the Hudson and towering skyscrapers accentuated by the gorgeous old architecture of yesteryear will delight the whole family. It’ll be the memory your children will think back on when they’re adults with fondness and affection.
You must be very organised to juggle a business with motherhood – do you have any top tips on how you stay on top of it all?
It is a delicate balance. You cannot be in three places at once, and that’s ok to admit. As much as we want to believe we can do it all, the reality is sometimes we can’t. I just try to remind myself that it’s more about quality time vs. quantity. I try to focus on what it is at hand and try to feel that I have done my best, whether it’s my children’s school play or my company’s upcoming press preview or my charity’s next fundraiser.
Do you make New Year resolutions? What will yours be for 2012?
I believe there is always room for improvement, but I don’t want to change who I am. I just be a better me that I can be. I hope to take all that I do now to the next level in 2012. I want to continue my company’s success and take it to the next level and continue our journey in fashion’s history. I want to extend awareness of my charity, the Keller foundation and improve upon all the fantastic work and support we offer to parents who have children battling liver disease. My husband and I are eternally thankful to all the blessings we’ve had in life and wish to extend that onto others in need. And I want to be an even better mother to my children and continue raising them to be the wonderfully yummie souls they have all the potential to be.
For all moms out there who struggle to get their body back after baby and for those who just need a little extra belly support, we owe Heather Thomson a big thank you. Heather is the creator of Yummie Tummie intimate and sportswear collections, a line of “undergarments” that suck you in and smooth you out while eliminating pounds off your appearance and camouflaging any lumps and bumps.
For over 15 years Heather has been a fashion designer and celebrity stylist working with P. Diddy, Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce. She created Yummie Tummie out of personal necessity and women everywhere are catching on! Heather is the mother of two and is our role momel of the week. Heather is mom to son, Jax who was born with bilary artresia and a daughter named Ella.
Are you seeing the same baby boom around you that I am? Two close girlfriends plus my upstairs neighbor are all expecting. Mazel tov!
And we all know that everyone loves buying presents for babies. But I make a point of remembering the mamas, especially right after she arrives home and needs some yummie love and support!
I gained 68 pounds when I was pregnant with my son, Jax, who was born with bilary atresia. It’s a rare and life threatening liver condition, and getting him well enough to come home was the most important thing in the weeks after his birth. I didn’t have time or energy to work out, or diet to get back to my pre-baby weight — but that didn’t mean I was happy showing my belly to the world every time I reached in to adjust my nursing bra!
When I got pregnant with my daughter, Ella, a few years later (and gained 63 pounds!) I remembered my disappointment with the nursing tops on the market. So I designed the Yummie Tummie Nursing Tank that does it all: it allowed me to quickly and discreetly nurse my sweet girl, gave me gentle support around my core, slimmed my new post-baby tummie and was a stylish layering piece I could dress up or down.
Now I give the Yummie Nursing Tank to all of my expecting friends, who love it — especially the first-time moms! And the latest yummie collection has the perfect companion piece to the gift: the new Yummie Shaping Yoga Pants! I can’t seem to take these off! They slim, smooth and shape your tummie and are one of my most versatile pieces in my own personal collection yet!
Treat your Mom-to-be girlfriend (or yourself!) to this Yummie Mummie Combo. It’s a gift she’ll use — and love! — every day because it helps her look and feel great, without taking any time or attention away from the new center of her universe.
Note from a Yummie Fan:
If you are about to have a baby or just had a baby this is ESSENTIAL! I wear it pretty much every day; it looks great under everything… and makes breast-feeding a breeze! – Breanne in Grand Rapids, MI
So versatile, so fashionable, and so functional! Stay cozy and covered up while discreetly nursing your little one. Plus get the confidence-boosting support from the Yummie shaping panel.
How to wear it: The nursing tank is great as a layering piece, giving you both access and coverage. We love how Bethenny Frankel pairs the nude tank with a pink cardi on this episode of “Bethenny Getting Married.” Click thru the images to see how stylish and comfortable she looks — plus her daughter Bryn is so adorable!
These leggings smooth, slim, and shape your tummie, hips, thighs and tush. They are stylish, versatile, and comfortable — a must-have wardrobe staple! I love them so much, I’ve been wearing the same pair for three days in a row!
The question I get all the time, from women of every age, shape and size, is “Can I really wear leggings?” The answer is a huge “YES to all of you!”
The trick is working them into your wardrobe in a way that matches your style, age, and shape. To really show you what I mean, we put together a Q & A with your most asked questions about leggings:
Karen, age 21: I’m short, just 4’11″ — will leggings make me look shorter?
HT: Leggings are great on petite women! It’s all about proportions, and fit. Like everyone, you want to avoid anything too form fitting on top. You’ll also want to skip anything too full or blousy, which can overwhelm your frame — think “body skimming”. Confidently show it off in leggings, a brightly patterned tunic and a cropped jacket.
Margaret, age 56: Are leggings really for grown ups? I just celebrated my 56th birthday and I feel great, but I think I’m probably too old for this style.
HT: You’re never too old to enjoy fashion trends! That said, you’re absolutely right, everyone is more comfortable in age appropriate outfits. Pick a longer top that is the right length for your stature, somewhere between your hip and mid-thigh. Keep the look casual, with a fun flat, or a low-heeled sandal. And pull the visual focus up to your beautiful, wise smile, with a flattering neckline or chunky earrings.
Lizzie, age 29: Can curvy girls really wear leggings? I love styles that show off my waist, but definitely want to keep my behind covered!
HT: I’m so glad to hear you say you love to show it off – and it sounds like you understand how to emphasize your best attributes. Shapely style is all about creating a flattering balance for your figure. Leggings, a long tunic, cinched with a bold belt, and sexy high-heeled boots say, “Check me out, I’m fabulous!” Play with colors and patterns on top, and if you have cleavage to brag about, flaunt it in a dramatic v-neck. Style means celebrating your shape, not covering it up!
Grace, age 36: My style is pretty conservative. Do leggings fit into my wardrobe?
HT: Leggings can be part of a very tailored look! A crisp white shirt, a long blazer, and some embellished loafers are classic and timeless with leggings. Add pearl earrings and a low ponytail, or cropped pixie cut, and you’re Audrey Hepburn in Rome! Another great look this season is to pair leggings with a short-sleeved shirtdress. Neutral, safari-inspired colors are easy for everyone to wear, and the epaulets and pockets keep the look fresh yet understated.
Theresa, age 42: I’m a mom of twin toddlers, and everything I wear is grab and go. How can I wear leggings without looking like I’m in my PJs?
HT: Mama, I know what you mean! My kids are both under five, and they keep me running! Leggings are my versatile lifesaver, because they actually help me look pulled together, while being comfortable enough to get on the ground and play with Hot Wheels or clean up Cheerios.
To keep it from looking too casual, ballet flats are my go-to-shoe. I also love the look of leggings with knee-high boots and a long sweater. Lately, with the warm spring weather, I’ve been throwing on short, colorful cotton t-shirt dresses, which keep it fun and machine washable! I dress it up with long necklaces, but if your kids are still in the “grab Mommy’s jewelry” stage, pull the look together with a bright scarf instead.
Do you have more questions? Share them on our Yummie Tummie Facebook page, and I’ll get back to you with an answer ASAP!
Remember, I designed the Yummie Tummie Shaping Legging to give you confidence and comfortable support, so you can enjoy this fun fashion trend. Leggings are a gotta-have it basic for every woman’s wardrobe, including yours! Show it off!

Like all Moms, Mother’s Day always makes me think of the amazing and emotional days when my kids were born. They are my pride and joy, and also my inspiration!
After Jax, our first child, was born, my search for a sexy and comfortable shapewear solution left me frustrated and frankly, disappointed in what the market had to offer. That is what led me to design my very first yummie tummie invention: The Original Yummie Tummie Tank! I decided to take off my consumer hat and put on my designer hat and ever since, I have been thrilled to discover that it wasn’t just me — women everywhere want the same thing: sexy, comfy shapewear that you can be confident in and love to show off!
When I was pregnant with Ella, inspiration struck again. I remembered how awkward nursing bras were – especially the part where I had to hike up my shirt and expose my midsection, at a time when I really wanted to be a little more covered up! I knew there had to be a better solution. But again, I couldn’t find exactly I wanted…so I designed it! The Yummie Tummie Nursing T has a “quick access” snap down bodice, making it easy to prepare to nurse. At the same time, it provides secure support, and enough comfortable coverage to feel confident nursing or pumping almost anywhere.
Now the Yummie Tummie Nursing T is my favorite shower gift, and makes a terrific Mother’s Day present! Give one to a new mom in your life. You’ll help her feel her best while she shares this special time and bond with her baby.
Stay yummie! Heather

First let me just thank everyone for their wonderful notes on our Facebook page!
Also – for everyone that has asked how they can donate, volunteer or register to be an organ donor, you can go directly on the New York Organ Donor Network’s website: DonateLifeNY.com
In case you missed this earlier in the week. April is Organ Donor Awareness Month, and this is a cause that’s very close to my heart.
My son Jax was born with bilary atresia, a rare and deadly disease that causes cirrhosis of the liver. A liver transplant saved his life when he was 5 ½ months old. We will always be grateful to the family who gave Jax this amazing gift by donating their son’s organs after he was killed in a traffic accident.
One way I try to repay that debt is to encourage people to learn as much as possible about organ, eye and tissue donation. It saves lives, saves families from suffering, and saves money by eliminating huge health care bills for treatments like kidney dialysis.
I hope you enjoyed many wonderful times this holiday season. It was great, but I have to admit, it’s almost a relief that busy December is over.
As a mom and professional woman, I’m always searching for ways to balance everything on my plate. Even when you love your job like I do, it’s tough to fit it all in with family and friends.
Add in the post-Thanksgiving rush of parties, gift shopping and year-end obligations, and you can forget about finding that all-important me time!
Great as it was to indulge in holiday treats and relax with loved ones, the price of all that yumminess is the struggle to squeeze back into my skinny jeans. I even admitted to the Wall Street Journal that I gained six pounds over the holidays!
Good thing Yummie Tummie helps me smooth out that holiday muffin top and lift my attitude. If you’ve worn a Yummie Tummie, you know exactly what I’m talking about, right?
New Year’s resolutions are a lot of pressure, especially when you’re already working as hard as you can. Instead, start the year fresh by giving yourself a break and a boost at the same time: get a Yummie Tummie.
Yummie Tummie gives you the freedom to be your best self in everyday outfits, from layering a Long Sleeved Body V under a cardigan, to dressing up jeans for girls-night-out with the jeweled neckline Glamour Tank.
Whichever fabulous style you choose, it will make you look terrific, and give you a rush of feel-good energy — just what you need to get moving on a New Year’s project, whether it’s a workout routine or a book club or a weekly bubble bath. It’s about whatever makes you feel Yummie and happy.
