A Stylist Dresses Skinny

High heels are the post-holiday shoes of choice for Heather Thomson.

Around this time of year, Ms. Thomson, a 39-year-old celebrity stylist and designer who created the Yummie Tummie shapewear tank top, sticks with three- to four-inch heels and boots to hide the extra pounds she typically gains over the holidays.

"I always wear high heels when I'm feeling fat because they lengthen my silhouette," says Ms. Thomson, who gained six pounds this past season by indulging in treats like hot chocolate, cookies and cakes and neglecting to work out while on vacation. "A high heel makes you have nice posture so you have to stand up straighter and taller," she adds.

For further slimming effects, Ms. Thomson dresses monochromatically in colors like black, charcoal grey and chocolate brown. Wearing one dark color, she says, has a slimming and elongating effect because it doesn't create any color changes that might draw a viewer's attention to areas like her waist.

Since most of her weight gain shows up around her middle, she favors long shirts that stretch down to midthigh and skinny pants that draw attention to her legs, and she avoids skirts and dresses. A recent outfit she wore included black skinny jeans and a long, untucked black blouse with a long black shapewear tank top underneath.

For people who gain weight around their hips but have thin stomachs, she recommends high-waisted pants, thin belts, wrap dresses and short sweaters and tops.

As for accessories, she piles on bracelets and dons scarves to draw others' eyes to her wrists and neck, and she wears four-inch-wide belts with big buckles.
